Matt. 31:33-46, The Parable of the Tenants

Setting the Scene (the Intentions of the Master)

Matt. 21:33, The Master of a house

  1. Planted a Vineyard (makes an investment)
  2. Put a fence around it (protects His investment)
  3. Dug a winepress (Why? What is His intention here?)
  4. Built a tower (Place to store fruit)(What is the Master’s intention here?)
  5. Leased it to tenants (What was His expectation of His tenants?)(Stewards or Sheperds)
  6. Went into another country (Why did He go to another country? Where is another country?)

Matt. 21:34-36, When the season for fruit drew near (Servants and Tenants)(Planters, Waters, and Harvesters)

  1. The Master sent His servants to the tenants to get His fruit
  2. The tenants took the servants
    • Beat one
    • Killed another
    • Stoned another
  3. Again He sent other servants more than the first and they did the same to them

Matt. 21:37-39, Finally, He sent His Son to them

  1. The Promised Son of David
  2. The Christ, The Messiah

Matt. 21:40-41, When therefore the owner of the vineyard comes

What will He do with the tenants

  1. Put them to death
  2. And let out the vineyard to other tenants
  3. Who will give Him the fruits of the season

Matt. 21:42, Have you never read the scriptures

  1. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone
  2. This is the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes

Matt. 21:43-44, Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people producing its fruits

  1. And the one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces
  2. And when it falls on anyone it will crush him

Matt. 21:45-46, When the Chief Priest and the Pharisees heard His parables

  1. They perceived He was speaking about them
  2. And although they were seeking to arrest Him
  3. They feared the crowds
  4. Because they held Him to be a prophet
