So while our bookmark is at John 18:15 and focused in on Peter’s denial of being a disciple of Christ, to capture the full story we need to go back to Jesus prediction that Peter would deny Him 3 times before the rooster crowed.

Peter used the highest form of covenant language with Jesus to confess loyalty to Him. 

In Matthew, “Though they all fall away because of you, I will never fall away“. 

In Mark, “Even though they all fall away, I will not”. 

In Luke, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” 

And in John, “I will lay down my life for You.”

So for a timeline, immediately after this confession Jesus takes His disciples to Gethsemane and prays and after that prayer Judas betrays the Lord. So when Jesus says to Peter, you will deny me 3 times, He literally means before the night is over you will deny me.

In Matthew, “I do not know what you mean”, “I do not know the man”, he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.”

In Mark, “I neither know nor understand what you mean,” “I do not know the man of whom you speak.”

In Luke, “Woman, I do not know Him,” “Man, I am not”, “Man, I do not know what you are talking about”

In John, “I am not”, “I am not”

4. Judas hangs himself

• And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself.
• But the chief priest, taking the pieces of silver, said “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is blood money.”
• So they took counsel and bought with them the potter’s field as a burial place for strangers
• This fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying And they took the thirty piece of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me (Jer. 19:1-13, Zech. 11:11-13)
5. John gives Judas credit for complaining about Mary anointing Jesus feet with expensive ointment. 
• John 12:1-8
• Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped His feet with her hair.  The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume.
• But Judas Iscariot, one of His disciples (he who was about to betray Him), said “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?
• He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it

Matt. 23:1-39, Seven Woes to the Scribes and Pharisees

Consider the idea being communicated by Jesus when He got angry with the actions He seen in the temple.

The Temple Scriptures are (Matt. 21:13, Mark 11:17, Luke 19:46, and John 2:16)

The key phrase that captures the core reason of Jesus reaction to them is,

“It is written, My house shall be called a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of robbers” or “Take these things away do not make my Father’s house a house of trade”

Coming off of our study last week from Matt. 21:33-41, The Parable of the Tenants. The Vineyard in the parable is the Temple or My Father’s House as Jesus says. The Tenants are the scribes and the Pharisees, that Jesus will address starting in Matt. 23:13-33. They are Shepherds of God’s sheep and just like the previous text in Ezekiel 34:1-31, we see these leaders missing God’s standard of faithfulness, as a steward, just like their father’s did before them.

One last key idea before we get started with Matt. 23 text, is in Matt. 16:6, “Watch and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees.” The full paragraph consist of Matt. 16:5-12, and the key conclusion is in vs. 12, “Then they understood that he did not tell them to beware of the leaven of bread, but of the teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.”

(Part 1) Speaking to the Crowds and His disciples about how to respond to the Temple Leaders

1. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on people’s shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to move them with their finger

3. For they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long
4. And they love the place of honor at feast and the best seats in the synagogues
5. And greeting in the marketplaces and being called rabbi by others

1.3-Matt. 23:8-12 (How does God’s leadership structure work in Christ?)

1. But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all brothers
2. And call no man your father on earth, for you have one Father, who is in heaven

5. Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.

(Part 2) Jesus makes His case against the leaders of His Fathers house and clearly condemns them of being guilty of poor stewardship of what they have been trusted with to manage. He points out they have not been obedient to the task expected of them to carry out for the Master of the House.

1. Therefore I send you prophets, wise men and scribes
2. Some you will kill, crucify, flog in your synagogues and persecute from town to town
3. So that all the blood of those trusted with delivering the message will come on you

3.2-Matt. 23:37-39 (Stone those who are sent as God’s messengers)

1. O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it!
2. How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!
3. See, your house is left to you desolate
4. For I tell you, you will not see me again, until you say “Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord”
