John 6 (Part 2) “Lessons from a Boat”

1-“Walking on Water”
John 6:16-21, Matt. 14:22-33, Mark 6:45-52
  • Where was the other side?
  • When is the fourth watch of the night?
  • Where was Jesus before He walked to the Disciples in a boat?
  • What happen after they pleaded with Him for rescue?
2-“Asleep in the Boat”
Matt. 8:23-27, Mark 4:35-41, Luke 8:22-25
  • What was Jesus doing when the boat was under attack?
  • What did the disciples think about the Lord’s actions?
  • How did Jesus respond to the disciples?
3-“Forgetting the Bread”
Matt. 16:5-12, Mark 8:14-21
(2 Cor. 4:4, Matt. 13:10-13)
  • In what way did the disciples misunderstand Jesus’ comment?
  • What instructions did Jesus give them to help them grasp the meaning of His words?
  • How do we fail to recognize the deeper meaning of Jesus’ teaching?

Feeding 5000
John 6:1-15, Matt. 14:13-21, Mark 6:32-44, Luke 9:10-17

Feeding 4000
Matt. 15:32-39, Mark 8:11-13

Demanding a Sign
Matt. 16:1-4, Mark 8:11-13, John 6:30-31

In this section of John in Chapter 6, John himself the author makes it clear that he is pointing out 2 signs about Jesus here.

As in the OT, God gave manna to the people in the wilderness, through Jesus, God is giving a greater bread to a greater wilderness. It is not just to a select people in a small area in the Middle East, but He is giving a bread to all the nations of the world and it is also a greater wilderness because it is the wilderness of lost souls of mankind because of sin that are hungry and thirsty. It is a far greater wilderness and bread that we are talking about here.

How ironic is it that the audience that Jesus just feed miraculously are demanding a sign like the one Moses did in the wilderness for their parents. Stop for a minute and think about this. Did He not just feed them in the middle of a deserted place proving He could provide for all of their needs in any place and in any situation. Wasn’t that what God was trying to teach the people of Israel in their wilderness?
